You buy an eighth on a Friday and finish it three weeks later. Somewhere in between the flower changes, and most people never notice until the last bowl tastes flat. A study published this month adds useful numbers to that quiet process, and it lands on a question every New York shopper eventually asks: what is the best way to store cannabis flower so it stays fresh?
Time is not really the enemy. Heat, light, and air are. Here is what the research suggests, what it does not, and what any of it means for an eighth on a Brooklyn windowsill in August.
What the New Storage Study Found
On August 11, 2026, researchers working primarily out of the University of Mississippi's National Center for Natural Products Research and School of Pharmacy published a storage stability study in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research.[1] They tested flower, extracts, oil formulations, and isolated THC and CBD across three chemovars, holding samples at room temperature, under refrigeration, and in a freezer at minus 20 degrees Celsius, with cannabinoid levels measured periodically by gas chromatography.
Room temperature storage accelerated the conversion of THC into CBN across most products tested. Freezing held cannabinoid content considerably steadier, and the most stable condition observed was THC in an ethanol solution at minus 20 degrees Celsius. CBD behaved differently: CBD dominant products stayed highly stable long term even at room temperature, which suggests the cold storage question matters far more for THC rich flower.
Two caveats belong next to that finding. The study measured chemistry, not experience, so nothing in it establishes how a person would perceive the difference. And a laboratory freezer is not a kitchen freezer, which is opened often, humid, and full of temperature swings.
The Older Literature Agrees, With One Wrinkle
Cannabis degradation is one of the few corners of this field with a long paper trail. A 1976 study in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology stored cannabinoid solutions alongside eleven herbal and resin samples for up to two years and reported that light exposure, not even direct sunlight, was the greatest single factor in cannabinoid loss.[2] Air oxidation mattered too. The effect of temperature up to 20 degrees Celsius, by contrast, was described as insignificant, and the authors concluded that carefully prepared herbal cannabis stays reasonably stable for one to two years if kept in the dark at room temperature.
A four year analysis in Forensic Science International likewise found steady, condition dependent decline rather than a cliff.[3] Read together the picture is consistent. Cold helps, and the 2026 data indicate it helps more than older work assumed, but for flower kept in a normal home darkness and an airtight seal do most of the work, and both are easier to get right than a freezer routine.
Terpenes Go First
Cannabinoid numbers are the headline and also the slowest thing to change. Aroma goes long before potency does.
A 2020 study in Frontiers in Plant Science profiled cannabis inflorescences and extracts stored in the dark at 25, 4, minus 30, and minus 80 degrees Celsius over a year.[4] Storage at 25 degrees produced the largest changes in cannabinoid concentrations, and whole inflorescences held at 4 degrees came out as the optimal condition tested. The terpene results were more sobering: terpenoid concentrations decreased rapidly under every condition studied, and two choices made it worse, temperatures below minus 20 degrees and grinding the flower before storage.
That last detail is the most actionable finding here. Grinding an eighth all at once increases the surface area exposed to air and appears to cost you aroma, so grinding as you go is a small habit with a real payoff. Does Old Flower Actually Make You Sleepy?
THC degrades into CBN, which has picked up a reputation as the sleepy cannabinoid. This is where storage science gets quietly oversold.
The best evidence is a double blind, randomized, placebo controlled trial published in Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology in 2024, with 293 participants in the modified intent to treat analysis.[5] Against placebo, 20 mg of CBN significantly reduced nighttime awakenings and overall sleep disturbance. The effect on overall sleep quality did not reach significance, and adding CBD did not appear to help further.
So CBN does something at 20 mg, in isolation, taken orally. Degraded flower is not that. The CBN generated by a few weeks of poor storage is a trace fraction of that dose, and it arrives alongside the THC that did not degrade. Early findings show CBN is worth studying. What This Means in a New York Apartment
A few rules hold up across all of this work. Keep it dark, since light was the largest single factor in the 1976 data and nothing since has contradicted it. Keep it sealed and the container reasonably full, because oxidation drives cannabinoid loss and a mostly empty jar is mostly air. Keep it cool and, more importantly, stable: a closet on an interior wall beats a windowsill, a car, or the top of a refrigerator, and New York apartments swing hard between July and January. Do not pre-grind.
The freezer is the one real judgment call. The 2026 study indicates freezing best preserves THC, while the 2020 data indicate temperatures below minus 20 degrees are unfavorable for aroma, and frozen trichomes turn brittle. For a long term stash, cold has a case. For an eighth you will finish this month, a cool dark cabinet is the better trade.

That range comes from commercial practice rather than controlled trials, so treat it as convention rather than a validated finding.
